  삶의 순환 Circle of life   

 

 

 

   자연은 좀처럼 도약하지 않는다. 그렇다고 멈춰 있지도 않다. 느끼지 못할 만큼 조금씩 변하지만 어느덧 눈앞의 풍광을 바꾼다. 삶도, 작업도 마찬가지라는 생각이다. 2000년부터 2021년 현재까지 가랑비에 젖듯이 조금씩 변화한 작업들을 모아보았다.

   나는 경험한 것을 그린다. 경험은 ‘일상’에서 물을 길어 ‘밥’을 짓는 과정이다. 식구들의 먹거리를 매번 준비하면서 야채, 곡식 등 여러 식재료들을 만난다. 흔하고 소소한 듯하지만 한 끼 한 끼를 지탱해주는 삶의 원동력이다. 영감은 내게 있어 하늘에서 뚝 떨어지는 것이 아니다. 일상의 경험에 관찰을 얹을 때 영감이 떠오르고 떠오른 영감은 작품을 직조(織造)한다.

   인간의 삶을 연상시키는 야채와 과일, 곡식과 씨앗들은 정교하고 경이롭다. 표면이 말라가는데도 솟아나는 감자 싹, 흡사 대가족인양 다닥다닥 군집을 이루며 기생하는 버섯들, 거미줄처럼 얽히고설킨 우리네 삶 같은 콩나물, 영원한 세계를 의미하는 무한 동심원의 양파, 붉은 물로 가득 찬 수박의 과육, 복숭아 한가운데 오롯이 박힌 씨앗과 부드러운 솜털들, 속은 말캉하지만 겉은 뾰족하고 단단한 오이의 가시들, 물컹한 토마토를 연결하고 있는 질긴 줄기들, 소복이 쌓인 쌀, 콩 등등……평범한 야채와 곡류에서 삶의 순환과 생명 에너지를 느낀다. 모두 끊어지지 않는 인연의 끈으로 내게 스며들어 치열한 생명력과 삶의 풍경을 일러주는 대상들이다.

   무얼 먹든, 우리가 먹는 음식이 우리의 일부가 된다. 햇빛이 키운 야채와 곡류는 태양의 넘치는 생명력을 우리 몸속 깊숙이 전달해준다. 그렇게 우리는 태양의 기운을 우리 몸의 일부로 흡수한다.

​

   뿌리고 수확하는 게 인생이고 작업이다. 여기엔 풍년도 있고 흉년도 있다. 목수가 나뭇결의 숨겨진 모습을 찾아 자연스러운 작품을 만들어나가듯, 작업은 삶 속에서 내 본성을 찾아가는 과정이다. 지난 20여 년의 작업을 바탕으로 가늘고 강인한, 새로운 나이테를 쌓으려 한다. 가장 강인하고 고귀한 나무가 가장 가는 나이테를 만드는 것처럼.

Circle of life

​

Nature rarely jumps. But it doesn't stop either. It changes a little bit so you can't feel it, but eventually it changes the scenery in front of you. I think life and work are the same. From 2000 to 2021, I have collected works that have gradually changed like drizzling rain. 

​

I draw what I have experienced. Experience is the process of drawing water from the "everyday" and cooking "rice". As I prepare food for my family every time, I meet various ingredients such as vegetables and grains. It seems common and small, but it is the driving force of life that supports every meal. Inspiration does not come from heaven to me. When I add observation to my everyday experience, inspiration comes and the inspiration weaves the work.

Vegetables, fruits, grains, and seeds that remind me of human life are sophisticated and amazing. Potato sprouts that sprout even though the surface is drying up, mushrooms that parasitize in clusters as if they are a large family, bean sprouts like our lives intertwined like a spider web, onions with infinite concentric circles that mean the eternal world, watermelon pulp filled with red water, peach seeds and soft cotton wool embedded in the middle, prickly cucumbers with soft inside but sharp and hard outside, tough stems connecting soft tomatoes, piled up rice, beans, etc. I feel the cycle of life and the life energy in ordinary vegetables and grains. They are all objects that penetrate me with an unbreakable thread of fate and tell me about the fierce vitality and landscape of life.

No matter what we eat, the food we eat becomes a part of us. Vegetables and grains grown in the sun convey the abundant vitality of the sun to our bodies. In this way, we absorb the energy of the sun as part of our body.

Sowing and harvesting is life and work. There are good years and bad years. Just as a carpenter finds the hidden appearance of the grain and creates a natural work, work is the process of finding my true nature in life. Based on the work I have done for the past 20 years, I want to build a new, thin and strong ring. Just as the most strong and noble tree makes the thinnest ring.
