  Wintering _겨울나기

 

 

  겨울이다. 한 여름 초록은 기운이 다하고 다음 해 생명을 준비하며 월동을 시작한다. 동물과 식물 등 생명체들은 외계에 적응하기 위해 나름의 방식으로 겨울을 견딘다. 자연의 기억이 각자 몸에 스며들어 있다. 이 겨울나기는 죽은 듯 조용해 보이지만 다음 생을 준비하는 치열한 기다림이다. 천적 있는 동물이 생존에 강하고 혹한을 거쳐야 식물의 봄꽃이 핀다. 봄의 도약을 위해 응축된 힘을 저장하는 겨울의 침잠이 필요하고 이 쉬어 가는 여백에서 생명의 복원력을 본다.

  모든 것은 변한다. 변화의 중심에는 상반된 듯 보이는 음과 양이 있다. 세상을 움직이는 원초적인 힘이다. 해/달의 천체, 하지/동지의 절기, 남자/여자, 태양 에너지를 발산하는 여름 잎 채소/땅의 기운을 흡수하는 겨울 뿌리 채소, 달걀 노른자/흰 자 등등… 하늘, 땅, 인간, 일상의 식탁 곳곳에서 음양(陰陽)을 만나고 나는 이 생명성을 탐구하는 작업을 한다.

​

 ‘동지(冬至)’는 일 년 중 밤이 가장 긴, 음기가 가장 강한 날이다. 부족한 양기를 보충하기 위해 붉은 팥죽을 먹고 추운 암흑 속에서 봄의 생기를 기다린다. 음과 양이 바톤 터치하면서 만물을 잉태하고 있는 생명의 절기다. 산다는 것은 죽음을 동반하는 과정이다. 현실의 삶 속에서 이들이 긴장하면서 마주칠 때 생명의 능동성이 분출한다.

 ‘입춘(立春)’은 겨울의 한 가운데 있다. 봄의 기운은 따뜻할 때가 아니라 추울 겨울에서부터 서서히 태동하고 가을로 들어서는 ‘입추(立秋)’는 서늘할 때가 아니라 여름 한창 더울 때다. 오묘한 절기의 신비다. 직선의 도약보다는 곡선의 순환으로, 모든 생명체가 유기적으로 연결되어 있음을 느낀다.

  성장하는 변화, 아름다운 변화도 있지만 반대로 죽어가는 아쉬운 변화도 있다. 변화가 일어나길 기대하지만 변할까 봐 두려운 변화도 있다. 고대인들은 달이 차고 이지러지는 변화를 주시해 작물을 심었고 삼라만상이 이어진 자연의 소리를 섬세하게 들었다. 반면 현대인들은 정보에 빠르게 연결되어 있지만 정작 주변 환경과는 고립된 섬처럼 단절되어 있다.

​

  만물을 품고 있는 자연의 말을 어떻게 잘 알아들을 수 있을까? ‘자연(自然), 스스로 그러한’ 변화를 몸으로 받아들이며 이 일부가 되어 겨울나기를 시작한다. 삶은 시소처럼 오르락내리락 하면서 균형을 찾아가는 과정이다. ‘궁하면 변하고 변하면 통하고 통하면 오래 간다’는 주역의 문구에서 음의 극점인 동지를 떠올리면서 원점에서 다시 출발한다.

  Wintering

 

  It is winter. After a summer of greenery, plants begin to hibernate, depleting their energy and preparing for the next year of life. Animals, plants, and other living things endure winter in their own ways to adapt to the outside world. The memory of nature permeates their bodies. This overwintering period may seem dead and quiet, but it is an intense wait for the next life. We see the resilience of life in the margins of winter's dormancy, where natural enemies must survive, where plants must go through a cold snap to bloom, where they store up energy for spring's leap.

  Everything changes. At the center of change are the seemingly opposite forces of yin and yang. They are the primal forces that move the world. The celestial bodies of the sun and moon, the seasons of the summer solstice and winter solstice, men and women, summer leafy vegetables that radiate the sun's energy and winter root vegetables that absorb the earth's energy, egg yolks and whites... I encounter yin and yang in the sky, on the earth, among humans, and at the table of everyday life, and my work explores this life force.

​

  The winter solstice is the time of year when the nights are longest and the yin is strongest. To replenish the lack of yang, we eat red bean porridge and wait in the cold darkness for the rebirth of spring. It is the festival of life, when yin and yang touch and conceive all things. Living is a process that is accompanied by death. When they meet in tension in real life, the active force of life erupts.

​

  "Ichun" is in the middle of winter. The energy of spring is born not when it is warm, but when it is cold, and the entrance to autumn is not when it is cool, but when it is hot in the middle of summer. This is the mystery of the seasons. It is a cycle of curves rather than a straight leap, and I feel that all life is organically connected.

​

  There are changes that grow, beautiful changes, but there are also regrettable changes that die. There are changes we look forward to, and changes we dread. The ancients planted their crops by watching the waxing and waning of the moon and listened carefully to the sounds of nature, which were passed down through the ages. Modern people, on the other hand, are quickly connected to information, but they are isolated from their surroundings.

​

  How can we better understand the words of nature, which contains all things? The answer is simple: accept the changes in nature, become a part of them, and begin to overwinter. Life is a process of finding balance by going up and down like a seesaw, and we start from the beginning again, remembering the winter solstice, which is the negative polarity in the main character's phrase, "When things are hard, they change, when they change, they work, and when they work, they last.
