The Breath of the Earth, the Flow of Water

Nature, which surrounds us, is not a static landscape but the source of life, constantly moving and breathing. Within the cyclical order of nature, artist Choi Hye-in captures the subtle movements of living things and the moments of their emergence, bringing them to life on the surface of her works through her distinctive visual language.
In this exhibition, The Breath of the Earth, the Flow of Water, the artist presents a cyclical narrative of nature, grounded in the philosophy of yangsaeng (養生), the cultivation and nurturing of life, which she has explored in depth over many years. A rich array of symbols comes together, ranging from the gifts of the earth—grains, vegetables, and fruits—to water as a source of life, nocturnal and dawn seascapes, and abstract landscapes inspired by seasonal turning points such as the winter and summer solstices. The artist observes, “Plants that grow beneath the earth’s firm surface, nurtured by light, air, and wind, are not merely ingredients for food; they are part of the world to which we ourselves belong.” Moving beyond the individual plant as an isolated subject, she explores our organic relationship with the world we inhabit.
The artist’s gaze begins with the humble ingredients of everyday life, then expands through the earth and its plants toward the vast currents of nature. Plants nurtured by the natural world become more than objects of representation; they form part of an ongoing continuum of life that extends through sunlight and air to the sea. Through a diverse range of media, these elements are transformed and reimagined within her artistic practice. Her material explorations, spanning Korean hanji paper, canvas, wood, ceramics, and fresco, give the theme of vitality increasingly layered and multidimensional expressions.
The plants that emerge on the surfaces of her works transcend the mere visual representation of material forms, unfolding instead as reflections on the conditions and relationships of all living things. Following the layers of “breath” and “flow” that the artist has built up along the cyclical passage from earth to water, from darkness to dawn, viewers are invited on a sensory journey toward recognizing the profound interconnectedness of humanity and nature.

The Breath of the Earth, the Flow of Water
“Everything beautiful exists beneath the earth and upon the earth.”
Life grows from the earth, nourished by sunlight, wind, and water, and holding within it the passage of time. Then, under the name of food, these things enter our bodies. Food, however, is not merely fuel for the body. It restores balance to a spirit that has become unbalanced and, at times, fills what is lacking.
My work begins with the thought, “What I eat becomes who I am.” As I nourish myself with food ripened by sunlight, I feel nature permeating my body. Plants that provide nourishment and humans who consume them are intimately connected. The earth is not only the ground on which we live, but also a generous maternal embrace that conceives and nurtures life. Through grains and vegetables harvested from the earth, as well as the moon, women, and the seasons, I have explored the vitality of life and sought yangsaeng (養生)—a way of cultivating a life in which body and mind exist in organic harmony.
I paint what I have experienced. Preparing food for my family at every meal, I encounter ingredients and discover within them a realm of life that is at once small and immense. Until now, I have painted ingredients purchased at markets as though they were portraits of plants. But when I encountered plants growing from the soil of Haenam last summer, I began to see what had previously remained invisible: the breath of the earth, light, air, water, and the flow of life extending toward the sea. The plants nurtured by the earth were not simply ingredients, but part of the world to which they belonged. Nothing exists alone. Everything grows, withers, and continues within an intricate web of relationships.
Grains and vegetables may appear fragile, yet they are powerful masses of life, constantly moving in order to survive. They evoke something animal-like even as they remain plants; they are hard yet yielding, seemingly light yet carrying weight. I am drawn to this duality of life.
Dark, black waterscapes become not spaces of an ending, but spaces like a womb that holds life. Bright colors, rather than suggesting lightness, instead carry the weight of life. I explore these paradoxes between the portrait of a plant and landscape, working across various grounds and surfaces—hanji, canvas, wood, ceramic, and fresco—using dyes and pigments, white clay, beeswax, and other materials.
Life is not a project to be completed, but a story that continually unfolds. It is a process through which different beings find harmony within their relationships. This exhibition is not a portrait of plants depicting nature, but a story about the states and relationships of all living beings. Beings that breathe, grow, tremble, and find their center again in their own different ways. The cycle of life extending from earth to water, from darkness to dawn. I seek to unfold a landscape where these breaths and flows meet and continue into one another.
